The Persatuan Peranakan Baba Nyonya Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (PPBNKLS ) will be hosting the 26th Baba Nyonya International Convention this November, 2013 in the resort-like ambiance of the Holiday Villa Hotel and Suites, Subang, Selangor. The annual Baba Nyonya Convention will be held for the first time ever in the capital of Malaysia.
Highlights of the Programme
Friday 29 November
Gala Night – The Convention commences with a colourful and glamorous evening of song, music, comedy, dance and culture. Come ‘glam ‘ in your Baba-Nyonya wedding best.
Saturday, 30 November
Seminar – From diverse backgrounds of cultural activism and literary arts, academe, media and film, the speakers will inform, entertain and explore what it means to be Peranakan today. The three plenary papers are:
1. ‘The Babas and Nyonyas : Beyond Borders, Into Cyberspace’ by Dr. Lee Su Kim, founding President of the PPBNKLS, writer and bestselling author.
2. ‘Portraits of the Peranakan Matriarch Past and Present : The Gaze and Representation of the Formidable Female’ by Daphne Ang, School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
3.‘Peranakans in Film’ by Lina Tan, film and TV producer and Founder of Red Communications
Baba-zaar – a Crafts and Marketplace of Peranakan paraphernalia. Visit the workshops on making bedak sejuk, bunga rampay potpourris, chanab decorations, red paper cuttings. Celebrity chef Nyonya Debbie Teoh will share recipes in her cooking demo, Tokoh Aunty Kim will teach the art of sulam on kebayas.
Shop till you drop at the stalls selling nyonya food, kueh, kebayas, sarongs, beaded shoes, jewelry, stationery, barang barang and books. Meet Peranakan authors who will be present to autograph their books.
‘ Old Kuala Lumpur’ Fellowship Evening
Held in the art-deco setting of the iconic Chinese Assembly Hall, come dressed up 1940-50’s style of Old KL. Think Saloma, Lin Dai, Grace Kelly, P. Ramlee, and help us transport you to a nostalgic evening and a sit-down dinner party. Be entertained by performances from our talented Peranakan Association members, party and dance the night away.
Sunday, 1 December
Tour and Farewell Lunch
A Sunday morning city tour in the heritage area of Dataran Merdeka, followed by a relaxing Farewell Lunch at the charming Saloma Restaurant.
